INTRODUCTION

JECPRESE is a database of presentations in both English and Japanese. The font (Colonna MT) and the colors of the logo above were chosen to emphasize that JECPRESE (pronounced "JECpress") is a bilingual corpus and that it is the fruit of joint collaboration of researchers working at Osaka and Tokyo.

The main purpose of this site is to offer linguistic support to non-native English- and Japanese-speaker researchers when they are preparing presentations in their second (or nth) language. It presents useful expressions as well as ways of explaining used by native speakers of the respective languages.

Searches for expressions can be conducted by inputting a word or phrase as the search item and/or by selecting a specific "step." In the database, "steps" are defined as linguistic realizations of speaker intent, in other words, the sentences in a text that express the specific purpose of the speaker, such as "introducing the background of the research field." More detailed information on step types is given on the Help Page. The search can also be refined to sentences containing target words/phrases expressing specific steps.

We express our deep gratitude to all researchers who kindly agreed to have their presentations included in this corpus and to those who helped with the building of this site. Special thanks go to Professor Fredricka L. Stoller of Northern Arizona University, Department of English, who has been working very hard with us since spring 2009, preparing the documents for official approval, obtaining written permissions from the presenters, contacting professional recording staff, and supervising the recording of presentations delivered by the students.
